As the summer of 2024 brings the emergence of cicadas in Virginia and other southeastern states, residents who suffer from tinnitus may experience varying effects.
Tinnitus, a condition characterized by ringing, buzzing, or humming noises in the ears, affects approximately 50 million Americans.
While the sounds of cicadas may provide relief for some tinnitus sufferers, they can exacerbate symptoms for others.
The Dual Nature of Cicada Sounds for Tinnitus Sufferers
As the head audiologist and founder of Hearing Doctors, I have witnessed firsthand the diverse impact of cicada sounds on tinnitus. Nature sounds are often employed in sound therapy to mask the intrusive noises of tinnitus.
For many, these natural sounds can be soothing and effective in providing relief. However, the unique sound of cicadas can have mixed results.
For some individuals, the constant hum and buzz of cicadas can mask their tinnitus, providing a form of relief. This masking effect occurs when the external sound, in this case, cicadas, covers up the internal tinnitus noise, making it less noticeable.
On the other hand, for those whose tinnitus already resembles the sound of cicadas, this natural symphony can amplify their symptoms and increase discomfort.
My Personal Experience with Tinnitus and Cicadas
As someone who suffers from tinnitus, I can personally attest to the challenges posed by cicada sounds.
My tinnitus manifests as a "symphony of cicadas," so the arrival of these insects does not provide relief but rather exacerbates my condition.
This personal experience highlights the importance of understanding the individual nature of tinnitus and the varied responses to sound therapy.
Sound Therapy and Hearing Protection
While there is no cure for tinnitus, sound therapy remains a valuable tool in managing symptoms. Using nature sounds, including cicadas, can be beneficial for some tinnitus sufferers.
However, it is crucial to recognize that what works for one person may not work for another. If cicada sounds do not provide relief, other forms of sound therapy, such as white noise machines or specific nature soundtracks, may be more effective.
For those who find cicada noises unhelpful or aggravating, customized hearing protection is a recommended solution. Hearing protection can prevent further hearing damage and provide a barrier against unwanted external sounds. The best way to obtain customized hearing protection is through an audiologist, who can tailor solutions to meet individual needs.
The Unique Cicada Event of 2024
This summer is particularly noteworthy due to the simultaneous emergence of two cicada broods: Brood XIX and Brood XIII. Brood XIX, with a 13-year life cycle, is primarily located in the Southeast, while Brood XIII, a 17-year brood, is found mainly in the Midwest. This rare dual emergence has not occurred since 1803.
Cicadas emerge when the soil temperature eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, typically from April through late June. The male cicadas are responsible for the loud calls associated with mating, making the periodical cicadas among the loudest of their kind.
Seeking Help
As the cicadas make their presence known this summer, it is essential for tinnitus sufferers to be proactive in managing their symptoms. Whether through sound therapy or customized hearing protection, there are ways to mitigate the impact of these natural sounds.
