Custom Hearing Protection and Earmolds at Hearing Doctors

What would you do if you were aware that some types of hearing loss are preventable?

If you’re like most people, you would do what’s necessary to prevent them. The good news is that hearing loss caused by noise exposure can be avoided.

We understand the importance of protecting your hearing health. With over 25 years of dedication to the Washington, DC, metro community, Dr. Ana Anzola and our team of expert audiologists at Hearing Doctors are committed to offering top-tier hearing care, which includes prevention.

Prevention starts with custom hearing protection designed to reduce the level of noise exposure to your ears.

Why Custom Hearing Protection Matters

Second only to presbycusis (age-related hearing loss), noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) from a single extreme noise event or prolonged exposure to loud noise is the most common cause of all acquired hearing loss cases and the number one cause for hearing loss in individuals from 17 to 65 years of age.

The most common cause of NIHL is related to ongoing occupational noise, affecting construction and factory workers, law enforcement, airport employees, and musicians, to name a few. However, noise damage to your ears can also come from recreational noise, like the noise from major sporting events, concerts, nightclubs, hunting and shooting sports, motorsports, and others.

Why Comfort Matters

Over-the-counter foam or silicone earplugs might provide some protection against the damage caused by NIHL, but they don’t always provide enough protection or the right kind of protection, and they can be very uncomfortable to wear. If your hearing protection isn’t comfortable, you probably won’t use it. Custom hearing protection provides the best level of protection from noise damage and the greatest level of comfort so you’ll have your hearing protection in place when you need it most.

Whether you are a musician, work in a noisy environment, enjoy attending loud events, or participate in hunting and shooting sports or motorsports, our custom earmolds offer the protection you need without compromising the quality of the sounds you want to hear.

Answering Your Custom Hearing Protection Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why should I wear hearing protection?

/
0

A. Loud noise destroys the very sensitive and irreplaceable hair-like cells in the inner ear. As these cells disappear, your inner ear becomes less efficient at receiving and transmitting sound signals to your brain.

Your risk of losing your hearing begins with ongoing exposure to noise levels above 85 decibels (dB) for more than eight hours without hearing protection. Unfortunately, with each 3 dB increase in volume, the time of exposure necessary for hearing damage decreases by half.

How much time can you be exposed to the noise of various activities without hearing protection before damage occurs? Follow this link to find out.

Q. Where and when should I use hearing protection?

/
0

A. Pilots, musicians, construction workers, and factory workers are the occupations at the highest risk of developing NIHL. Most companies in these occupations provide specialized hearing protection as part of your mandatory safety equipment.

If you don’t work in any of these occupations, you could still be doing damage to your hearing from noise related to your lifestyle and the leisure activities you enjoy, like:

  • Mowing the lawn
  • Riding your motorcycle
  • Using a chainsaw or power tools around the house
  • Using pneumatic tools (drills, nailguns, power wrenches)
  • Frequenting concerts, major sporting events, or bars and nightclubs
  • Participating in hunting and shooting sports
  • Witnessing fireworks and firecrackers

Q. Do you offer custom-fit earplugs for different occupations and activities?

/
0

A. We offer customized ear protection to help prevent noise-induced hearing loss, including:

  • High-fidelity earplugs for musicians and concertgoers, designed to preserve sound quality while reducing overall volume
  • Noise-reducing earmolds for industrial workers, ensuring safety in loud work environments
  • Sleep molds for those seeking relief from nighttime noise disruptions, promoting a restful night's sleep

Q. Can I use one set of earplugs for different situations or activities?

/
0

A. Yes. Many of the custom earplugs we provide have interchangeable filters, so you can use a single set in different environments and for different activities.

Q. Are there special earplugs for musicians and concertgoers?

/
0

A. Yes. We also provide earplugs for musicians and concertgoers.

Q. What does NRR mean for hearing protection?

/
0

A. NRR stands for Noise Reduction Rating. It provides a standard guideline as to the potential of a device to reduce noise in decibels. Higher NRR numbers mean you’re getting higher levels of hearing protection.
