Recently, I had the privilege of talking to Daily News-Record to discuss the essential topic of hearing health.

"It takes a lot more to evaluate the auditory system,” I explained. “It is definitely not digital signal processing with artificial intelligence.”

We educate patients on the differences between over-the-counter devices and those available through our clinics and urge them not to compromise on product quality, technology, or service.

“We really focus on prevention, education, early identification, intervention, and [how] to manage hearing for the rest of your life,” I shared during the interview.

Why You Should Consult a Doctor of Audiology

Obtaining hearing aids over the counter is not advisable without consulting a doctor of audiology. Hearing aids need to be prescribed, verified, and validated by an audiologist who can address the root causes of hearing issues.

Over-the-counter places like Costco may not have audiologists on staff, potentially affecting the quality of care provided.

Finding the Right Hearing Care Provider

When seeking a place to address hearing needs, I recommend looking for a doctor of audiology—the highest degree an audiologist can attain. It is also essential to ensure that the doctor is certified to evaluate hearing, balance, and cognition comprehensively.
