Hearing loss isn’t just a simple nuisance one has to live with. It affects every area of your life. Here are some of the ways you may be impacted:
Relationships Suffer
People with untreated hearing loss tend to shy away from starting new relationships, and often don’t maintain many of the relationships they have. Not being able to follow a conversation, and not feeling understood, makes it hard to connect with people. People with untreated hearing loss often retreat into themselves, rather than continuing to feel misunderstood by those around them. Social isolation is common amongst people with hearing impairment.
Fewer Activities
People with untreated hearing loss are less active than people who wear hearing aids, because they may not be able to enjoy the same activities they used to. Card games, concerts and even some sports become difficult when you can’t hear what’s going around you. Many people with untreated hearing loss simply stop doing the things they used to do, because not being able to hear makes those activities unenjoyably.
Concurrent Health Problems
Hearing impairment often comes with other health conditions. Incidences of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and dementia are higher amongst those with hearing impairment than those without. But because of the difficulty in communication, people with untreated hearing loss are less likely to receive early, or preventative treatment for these conditions, leading to increased health problems.
Safety Concerns
People with untreated hearing loss are at higher risk for accidents than people with hearing aids. Not being able to hear a car horn, someone calling out to you, or a safety alarm, can increase your chances of being harmed in an accident. This is a risk that people with untreated hearing loss live with every day.
Lower Income
Research has shown that people with untreated hearing loss have lower incomes than those who wear hearing aids. People with hearing loss tend not to step up to leadership positions in their companies, and they don’t participate fully in meetings and on committees. Being passed over for a big project or promotion is all too common amongst people who suffer from untreated hearing impairments.
You Can Change This
Hearing loss is highly manageable with regular visits to an audiologist and corrective hearing devices. People with hearing loss can live fully productive lives that include work, friends and activities when they have the right care and the right equipment. Don’t let hearing loss take you away from the people and things you love in your life. Visit a professional, experienced audiologists today to help you get the right hearing aids for you, and get you back into the game of life.
