What is an Over-The-Counter (OTC) Hearing Aid?

What is an Over-The-Counter (OTC) Hearing Aid?

Are OTC Hearing Aids Safe?

OTC hearing aids will be regulated as medical devices by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They can be safe, although we do recommend that you first visit your primary care physician or hearing healthcare provider to rule out possible causes of your hearing loss such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or blockages in the ear canal.

Where Can I Purchase an OTC Hearing Aid?

The goal is to have them easily accessible to all individuals who fit the criteria of having mild-to-moderate hearing loss. We expect them to be available for purchase in most retail and drug stores, online, or from your local hearing healthcare provider.

How Do I Set Up and Learn How to Use an OTC Hearing Aid?

OTC hearing devices are typically self-fit. That means you follow the instructions given on the packaging. Some devices may have an accompanying smart phone app or online tech support to help with the fitting process. If you purchase from a local hearing professional they will assist you to achieve the best possible sound.

OTC Hearing Aids are Not For Everyone

They were created for adults only. You must be 18 years or older to purchase or use an OTC hearing aid. They are for individuals who perceive themselves to have mild-to-moderate hearing loss. That is minimal difficulty when in normal listening environments. If you are unsure what your hearing loss level is, schedule an appointment for a hearing screening at your local Hearing Doctors location.
