A recent study confirmed something we already knew – that seniors who use hearing aids have better social relationships than those who have untreated hearing loss. But it also confirmed something new – older men with hearing loss who use hearing aids live longer!
Hearing Loss Leads To Premature Death
The study out of Iceland and published in the journal Age and Ageing included almost 5000 participants aged 67 and up. Researchers found that older men with hearing loss, or with both hearing loss and visual impairment, have a higher chance of dying within a five-year period than those without the same impairments.
Hearing Impairment Related To Early Death
When compared to men with normal hearing and normal sight, the men with impaired hearing and sight had a greater chance of dying from any cause. Men who had only hearing impairment were at a greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than men without any impairments.
Hearing Aids Lower Your Chance Of Dying
The study found that people who used hearing aids to treat hearing loss – whether they had any visual impairment or not – had a lower chance of dying than the people who didn’t use hearing aids.
It Matters For Men
It is important to note that while there were significant differences for the men in the study, for women there was no association between hearing loss, visual impairment and mortality.
