Earwax, also known by the medical term cerumen, is produced by glands in the outer ear canal. Its purpose is to trap dust and other small particles and prevent them from reaching and potentially damaging the eardrum.
Earwax also may prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi in the ear canal. But too much ear wax can cause blockages which can reduce your hearing.
What causes earwax blockages?
Blockage, or impaction of earwax occurs when the wax gets pushed deep within the ear canal or fills the width of the canal.
The most common cause for earwax to build up and create a blockage is the insertion of cotton swabs (i.e. Q-Tips) and other objects in the ear canal, which push the wax deeper into the canal.
Earwax buildup and blockage is one of the most common ear problems doctors see.

What are the signs and symptoms of earwax buildup or blockage?
Decreased or muffled hearing
Dizziness
Ear pain
Plugged or fullness sensation in the ear
Ringing in the ear
Do I need to clean the wax out of my ears? If so, how and often?
The ear is a self-cleaning system that naturally pushes the wax out of your ears to prevent blockages.
However, if you wear hearing aids, use ear plugs, or your body produces an excess amount of earwax, you may want to remove excess wax on a regular basis.
DO NOT STICK ANYTHING IN YOUR EARS! You risk damaging your ear drum and pushing the wax in further and causing a blockage.
