As an audiologist who has spent years helping patients navigate the challenges of hearing loss and tinnitus, I recently had the opportunity to share some insights on tinnitus during an interview with WTOP’s Grace Newton.
Tinnitus is a condition that affects millions of Americans, yet many people are still unsure about what it is and how to manage it effectively.
What Is Tinnitus, and How Does It Impact Your Life?
Tinnitus is often described as a ringing in the ears, but it can also manifest as buzzing, humming, or other noises that aren’t present in the external environment. It’s a condition that affects around 50 million people in the United States alone.
For some, tinnitus is a mild annoyance, but for others, it can significantly impact their quality of life.
During my interview with WTOP, I emphasized how tinnitus can start at a very mild level and gradually become more pronounced. Unfortunately, the more you focus on it, the louder and more disruptive it can become. This is why it’s so important to address tinnitus early and take steps to manage it effectively.
The Causes of Tinnitus
Tinnitus can be caused by a variety of factors, including aging, exposure to loud noises, ear infections, and even wax buildup. It’s a condition that doesn’t discriminate—people of all ages and backgrounds can experience tinnitus.
However, it’s particularly prevalent in individuals who have spent a lot of time in noisy environments without proper hearing protection.
How to Manage Tinnitus Effectively
One of the key points I discussed during the interview is the importance of noise protection. If you’re regularly exposed to loud environments, implementing noise protection can be incredibly helpful in preventing tinnitus from worsening. But what can you do if you’re already experiencing tinnitus?
There are several strategies that can help manage tinnitus:
Meditation and Breathing Exercises:
These can help reduce the stress and anxiety that often accompany tinnitus, making the condition more bearable.
Medication:
In some cases, medication can be prescribed to help manage the symptoms of tinnitus.
Sound Therapy:
This is another effective method, where external sounds are used to mask or reduce the perception of tinnitus.

The Connection Between Tinnitus and Environmental Sounds
This summer has been particularly challenging for some tinnitus sufferers due to the emergence of cicadas. In a recent blog post, I explored how the sounds of cicadas can affect those with tinnitus. For some, the natural hum of cicadas can provide relief by masking the internal noise of tinnitus. However, for others it can exacerbate their symptoms.
My recent interview aligns with these findings. Whether it’s the sound of cicadas or the persistent ringing of tinnitus, understanding your condition and seeking appropriate care can make a significant difference.
